Licorice root extracts protect the skin against oxidative stress injuries, accelerate wound epithelization, ameliorate remodeling at the wound site, and efficiently reduce the symptoms of atopic dermatitis (AD).
Extracts are now used in cosmetic productions by their skin-whitening, anti-sensitizing, and anti-inflammatory properties. Their use was widely applied in commercial products, particularly in cosmetic products, for its good whitening effect. Licorice is said to have a soothing effect on skin and supports to ease inflammation. The glycyrrhizin found in licorice can decrease redness, irritation and swelling, and is used to treat skin conditions like atopic dermatitis and eczema. Glabridin has many properties potentially beneficial in cosmeceutical products. It acts as antioxidant, estrogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging activities and skin-whitening agent. It displays skin depigmentation activity and is being incorporated in topical products intended specifically for that purpose.
For these effects, the licorice extracts are also used in the formulation of sunscreens and also for personal care products such as facial cleansers, make-up removers, toners, and shampoo. Moreover, make-up products such as foundations, concealers, around-the-eye creams, make-up primers, lipsticks, and BB creams contain licorice extract.
